Can A Mutual Fund Go Bankrupt? What Happens To Your Money Then?

by Carlos Leave a Comment

Flow of Mutual Fund Investments

I am writing this article for two reasons:

(1) To once and for all address the fears of mutual fund investors ( or would-be investors ) who are forever worried about their investments just vanishing into the thin air like what usually happens in Pyramiding Scams or banks that go out of business and;

(2) To elaborate my response to a client’s SMS message sent to me the past weeks, which I quote,

“Sir good morning. Bigla lang pumasok sa isip ko…. Paano kung biglang bumagsak ang FAMI. Ibig sabihin ba nito lost na ang investment namin?”

Such smart question deserves a smart answer!

So please read carefully and may this article help you to increase your Financial IQ.

How to Start Investing in Mutual Funds

by Carlos 8 Comments

Fund Performance of the Philam Strategic Growth Fund ending January 3, 2014

Investing in a mutual fund is very different from investing is fixed-income securities which you may already be familiar with — Time Deposit, T-Bills, BSP’s Special Deposit Account, etc. And it is very important that you are aware of these differences.

When you invest in a Mutual Fund, you are actually buying common shares in the company — and that makes you a part-owner of the corporation.

This article discusses the details of investing in mutual funds in the Philippines.

High-Income or Hype-Income? How to Smell A Rat Without Getting Suffocated — Part 2 of 2

Scam Alert

This is the second part of a series on Scam Detection category. Previously, we cited two of the most common tricks scammers use to catch their victims: by appearing impressive and by using celebrities. This final installment continues with some more tips.

There’s just one thing I’d like to clear out:

I do believe in high-income investments and business opportunities and that they are also associated with greater risk. There’s always this Risk-Reward trade off in everything.

I’m not opposed to someone accumulating the as much riches as he can take. As a matter of fact, I personally believe that everyone deserves to be rich!

by Carlos 5 Comments

Mutual Fund and the Securities Law of the Philippines

Mutual Funds may appear to be a recent investment phenomenon to hit this country, but in reality the law that governs them has been with us since 1960.

In this article, we’ll dissect the Investment Company Act (ICA) of the Philippines since it is the enabling Law that govern the creation, regulation, licensing and monitoring of Mutual Funds in this country.

Plus, we’ll also highlight the important provisions of the ICA Rule-35, which state in details the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the Philippine Investment Company Act of 1960.
